Cambodian Minister Cham Nimul Highlights New Rice Export Strategy for Enhanced Market Diversification

Phnom Penh, March 12, 2024: Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul led the National Workshop on "Strategic Development Process for the Expansion and Diversification of the Cambodian Rice Market" on Tuesday morning at the Phnom Penh Hotel. The collaborative effort between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aims to establish a robust strategy to elevate Cambodia’s position in the global rice market from 2024 to 2030.

Minister Cham Nimul stressed the significance of the forthcoming rice export strategy and market diversification as critical tools for the Royal Government. She emphasized the Ministry of Commerce's pivotal role in expanding markets and boosting rice exports through market-oriented production and marketing strategies globally.

The minister highlighted the strategy's alignment with national priorities, including the first phase of the Pentagon Strategy and the National Strategic Development Plan. It also resonates with Cambodia's and the United Nations' 2030 sustainability goals, aiming to propel Cambodian rice to competitive heights on the international stage.

To ensure the rice sector’s sustained success, Minister Cham Nimul proposed two essential recommendations for discussion:

1. Trademark and Intellectual Property Protection: Emphasizing the development of collective branding.

2. Enhancement of Rice Quality: Addressing quantity, quality, safety, and packaging aesthetics.

Cham Nimul urged participants and stakeholders to deeply engage in discussions on strategies to expand and diversify the Cambodian rice market, aiming for sustainable growth. This underscores the government's commitment to positioning Cambodia as a notable player in international rice exports.
